Blogs Versus Traditional Websites
For many real estate agents, a blog is a relatively new concept, and the question is frequently raised, “I already have a website, why would I need a Blog?” The answer is simple, a blog is a website. It’s a website that allows you to provide the same content as a traditional website, yet allows you to update the content as quickly and easily as sending an email. And on the web, fresh content is king.
Real estate is a “people business”. People chose a real estate agent based on their experience, qualifications and knowledge, and a real estate blog is the perfect medium for displaying all three of those qualities.
A traditional website is made of static pages, content that does not change. These pages are fantastic for providing an “About Us” page for example, but if your want to inform prospective home buyers about a new development in the area, or discuss the importance home staging with real life experiences your out of luck.
With a real estate blog, an agent can still provide the needed pages of a traditional website, such as Featured Listings, Home Search, Buyer’s Tips, etc., but they can also create an environment that engages the prospective client, with frequent updates, news, and analysis of the local market.
Therefore the blog accomplishes the goal of having an online presence much more effectively than a traditional website.
The goal of real estate blogging is simple. The folks at Real Estate Weblogging 101put it best when they created this list of blog objectives. You want to create a blog where
Readers like what you have to say
- Enough to return to read future posts
- Enough to subscribe by email or RSS feed
- Enough to promote your weblog to their friends or associates
- Enough to use you for a real estate transaction
- Enough to commit to you for their future transactions
- Enough to refer you to family and friends
- Enough to refer you to strangers
- Enough to actively campaign for you with anyone who has a real estate need
A traditional website fails at all these objectives. A good real estate website at best presents you as a successful agent, provides information that is not on every other real estate website, and “captures” a prospect’s contact information for an email “drip” campaign.
But prospects are smarter and savvier, and they don’t want to be dripped on. They want to be engaged.
